PP Dana Price: What Decides the Rate You Pay
Ask five suppliers for the price of PP dana and you can get five different numbers on the same day. That is not always bargaining. The rate for plastic dana depends on what kind of dana it is, how it is made and what is included in the quote. Here is what decides the price you pay, and how to compare quotes fairly.
1. The fresh polymer market
Fresh polypropylene is made from propylene, which comes from crude oil and gas. Large petrochemical producers revise their list prices regularly, and the whole market, including recycled dana, moves with them. When fresh PP gets costlier, demand for recycled granules rises and their price follows. This is why PP dana rates change from one week to the next.
2. Fresh or recycled
Fresh (virgin) PP usually costs more than recycled PP granules. Recycled dana is made from used polypropylene that is sorted, washed and extruded back into granules, and it is the practical choice when cost matters and the part does not need the properties of fresh material. Read more in our guide to virgin vs recycled PP granules.
3. PP or PPCP
Copolymer (PPCP or CP dana) usually costs more than homopolymer PP because of the ethylene that gives it extra toughness. If your part does not need that toughness, homopolymer can bring the rate down. See what PPCP means.
4. Colour and grade
Within recycled dana, the grade makes a big difference. Natural and transparent grades need the cleanest, best-sorted material, so they sit at the top. Bright, consistent colours cost more than everyday shades, and regrind is the most economical option for functional parts where looks matter less.
5. Consistency and testing
A cheap batch that flows differently from the last one costs more in rejected parts than it saves. Dana that is tested on every batch, with a steady melt flow index and low moisture, is worth more than the same material sold untested.
6. Quantity, freight and terms
Order size, packing, freight to your factory and payment terms all change the final rate. A quote ex-factory and a quote delivered to your door are not the same number.
7. GST
Plastic granules are taxed under GST, at 18% for polypropylene in primary form at the time of writing. Check whether a quote is inclusive or exclusive of GST before you compare it.
How to compare PP dana quotes
- Compare the landed cost per kg: rate, GST and freight together.
- Compare the same grade: homopolymer with homopolymer, natural with natural.
- Ask for the MFI and a test report for the batch.
- Run a sample on your machine before placing a full order.
