PPCP Full Form: What PPCP Means and Where It Is Used

Coloured polypropylene granules in glass bowls

The full form of PPCP is Polypropylene Copolymer. In the Indian plastics trade it is also written as PP-CP, CP or PPCP, and the granules are often called CP dana. If you buy or process plastic granules, it is one of the most common materials you will come across.

What PPCP is

Polypropylene is made by joining propylene molecules into long chains. When only propylene is used, the result is PP homopolymer, usually written simply as PP. When a small amount of ethylene is added during manufacture, the result is a copolymer: PPCP. The ethylene changes how the material behaves, mainly by making it tougher.

The two types of PPCP

  • Impact copolymer, also called block copolymer. A rubbery ethylene-propylene phase is spread through the polypropylene, so parts absorb knocks instead of cracking, even in the cold. When buyers in India ask for PPCP granules for moulding, this is usually what they mean.
  • Random copolymer, often written PPR or PP-R. The ethylene is spread evenly through the chains, which gives better clarity and flexibility. It is widely used for hot and cold water pipes, the familiar PPR pipes.

PPCP vs PP: the short version

  • PP homopolymer is stiffer, harder and a little more heat resistant.
  • PPCP is tougher on impact, especially at low temperatures, and gives away a little stiffness in exchange.
  • Both are light, resist most chemicals and process easily on injection moulding machines.

We cover the choice in more detail in PP vs PPCP granules.

Where PPCP is used

  • Crates, bins and pallets that are stacked and dropped
  • Buckets and containers
  • Plastic furniture such as chairs and tables
  • Automotive and appliance parts
  • Luggage shells and toys

Is PPCP the same as PP?

PPCP is a type of polypropylene, so in that sense PP is the parent family and PPCP belongs to it. In day-to-day buying, though, PP usually means homopolymer and PPCP means copolymer, and the two are not interchangeable for every part. A crate made from homopolymer may crack on a cold morning where a PPCP crate would survive the same drop.

PPCP granules from Markandey Polymers

We manufacture recycled PP and PPCP granules in Delhi. In our catalogue, grades with CP in the name belong to the copolymer family, such as the CP Colour and CP PW Colour ranges. Every batch is tested in our own lab before dispatch. Tell us the part you make and we will suggest a grade to trial. Ask for a quote.
